GUSTAV RICCI - SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR

It is not an every day occurrence that a golfer is nominated to receive an award. In these past years, I can only recall Nicholas Beck and John Micallef Stafrace to have been nominated for a chance to receive the award for the best junior sportsperson.

So it was with great pleasure to learn that Gustav Ricci had also been so nominated in 1984. Gustav would then have been a young 58 year old.

I believe that this was the very first time that a golfer was so nominated and I think it is still the only time that a non-junior golfer had the privilege to be so nominated.

The MALTA GOLF ASSOCIATION was founded in 2006 and acts as the governing body for the sport of golf in the Maltese Islands and observes the Rules of Golf and the Rules of Amateur Status as laid down by the R&A of St. Andrews.

The Association is a non-profit organization run by golfers for the benefit of golfers with membership predominantly open to amateur golfers who are members of a golf club or golf society within the geographical area of the association irrespective of gender, colour and religion.

The Association is affiliated to the R&A; the International Golf Federation and the European Golf Association. Locally it is registered with the Maltese Olympic Committee, Sport Malta, the Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sports and the Commissioner of Voluntary Organisations.

The management of the affairs of the Association is vested in the Executive Council, in accordance with the provisions and regulations of a Statute.
