We have been genuinely surprised to find out that Malta has a female professional golfer by the name of Michelle Scerri.
Michelle responded to our recent posts via the social media which invited Maltese living abroad to make contact with us in an effort to enrich our national teams. An initiative started by the Buhagiar family in Canada quickly caught the imagination of the Maltese embassies of the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and Poland who shared the post through their own links. As a result, we have had many positives replies ranging from mature players to very young ones. All highlighted that there are opportunities to be explored out there as well as a thirst of the Maltese community to come together and help such initiatives.
Michelle’s response is unique in the sense that she has highlighted a previously unknown element about the game’s links to Malta. *Michelle turned professional at age 21 after a successful amateur career representing her state and country from the age of 14. After turning professional, she spent her first year on tour in Europe, but she found her niche in the U.S where she spent seven successful years playing on the U.S Futures Tour. She absolutely loved the US and enjoyed the majority of the year abroad before returning home to the southern hemisphere to play on the Aussie and Asian Tours.
Her career highlights include scholarships at the Australian and Victorian Institute of Sports, a couple of second place tour finishes in the US and competing at the 2000 US Open at The Merit Club in Chicago. When she finished playing on Tour full time, she went on to manage Burnley Golf Course for 17 years, a much-loved inner city golf course in Melbourne. Her decision to quit her fulltime management work in 2020 and become a health coach has allowed her to continue golf coaching and I'm very fortunate to be able to teach golf at Altona Lakes golf course a few days a week.*
