MIA FOR THE R&A JUNIOR OPEN 2014

31/07/2013

As far as we know, at 14 years of age, Mia Allsopp is the first girl in the country’s golfing history that has come through the ranks of a Junior programme, achieves a handicap and is able to play golf regularly on a competitive level.

The Malta Golf Association has already identified her to be the country’s representative at the next R&A Junior Open Championship that will be played in England next year. The Junior Open is a Biennial event for boys and girls under 16 years of age and, so far, our ambassadors have all been boys. Thus, Mia will be the first young female golfer to represent Malta in this event.

As Mia had zero experience of golf courses abroad, we encouraged her to visit the venue of the Junior Open next year and put in some practice rounds. She did this in early July playing the West Lancashire Golf Course (the venue for the Junior Open) and the neighbouring Royal Liverpool Golf Course (the venue for next year’s British Open). Both golf courses are links and are abundant with heavy rough – both new challenges for the young girl.

At the Lancashire course, Mia played a stroke play round whilst at Royal Liverpool Mia played in a four ball better ball match which she managed to tie.
