MALTA joins the EUROPEAN GOLF ASSOCIATION

06/11/2007

The Malta Golf Association presented its affiliation membership to the delegates of the European Golf Association conveyed for the Annual General Meeting at the Celtic Manor, Wales on Saturday, 20th October 2007.

William Beck (MGA President), who was accompanied by Ian Restall (MGA Secretary), addressed the EGA Committee and the delegates representing various other National Federations, Unions and Associations. The MGA President gave a brief overview of the development of golf in Malta since the game was introduced to the Islands in 1888 and shared the Association’s vision for the future of the development of the game amongst a younger generation.

The Maltese presentation was well received by the EGA delegates who voted unanimously to accept Malta’s application. The Malta Golf Association thus became the 38th country to become affiliated to the EGA since the latter was founded during a meeting held in Luxembourg on the 20th November 1937. The MGA will form part of the Southern Zone which is comprised of European countries touching the Mediterranean Sea and which is currently chaired by the Italian Golf Federation.

Amongst other responsibilities, the EGA strives towards a common golf handicapping system that would span throughout its affiliated European countries making it possible for golfers playing on a different course than their own, to translate their home club handicap according to the ease or difficulty of the golf course being visited.
