MEDITERRANEAN FRIENDSHIP GAMES 2010

17/11/2010

Golf will be part of the fourth edition of the Mediterranean Friendship Games hosted by the Maltese Olympic Committee.

This annual sports festival sees Maltese athletes compete against their Sicilian counterparts. Apart from golf, the 2010 programme is made up of nine other disciplines namely badminton, chess, canoeing, equestrian, fencing, karate, pool, triathlon and beach volley.

The concept of the festival is to strengthen ties between national federations and enhance the level of sport. The first edition took place in Sicily, November 2007. Andy Borg and Peter Satariano playing in Le Madonie Golf Club won their matches for Malta. The second edition was played in Malta in May 2008 with Andy Borg and Nick Borg representing the country. The Borgs won the match on the first day and the Sicilians won it on the second day. In true golf spirit, the tournament for 2008 was halved. Unfortunately, golf could not participate in the 2009 tournament due to the unavailability of a golf course near Trapani.

This year’s matches will be played at Marsa on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 starting at 13:12 hours and are possible due to the Royal Malta Golf Club who have given us kind courtesy of the course.

Malta will be represented by Andy Borg, Peter Satariano and JJ Micallef with Ray Mountford as official. The Sicilians will be bringing Alessandro Leonardi, Luigi Cordio, Pio Ranieri with Dario Barbagallo as official.
