ANDY BORG - 1 SHOT OFF LEAD

11/09/2009

At the end of play of the second round of the 26th Hellenic International Amateur Golf Championship, Andy Borg lies joint second place together with Steve Parthenis (Greece) and just one shot off Germany’s Aaron Leitmannstetter.

Borg’s one under par 71for the day was achieved through 3 bogeys, 11 pars and 4 birdies. Andy was in fact leading the tournament by 3 shots with 3 holes to play but Leitmannstetter rallied back with a birdie on the 16th to Andy’s bogey and an eagle on the 18th to another unfortunate bogey from Andy.

Leitmannstetter thus has an aggregate of 142 after 36 holes to Borg’s and Parthenis 143 – both four shots ahead of Adam Kritikos who was joint leader at the end of play yesterday.

The other two Maltese participants both improved on their scores from yesterday. Chris Bergedahl played 79 for a total of 159 and 13th place whilst JJ Micallef played 76 for a total of 161 and 15th place.

With the best two individual scores from each player counting for the Nations Cup, the Maltese team is placing second with eight shots behind one of the two teams fielded by the host nation and four shots ahead of the Slovenian Team.

10/09/2009 - ANDY BORG JOINT LEADER

Malta’s National Team player Andy Borg shares the lead with Aaron Leitmannstetter of Germany and Adam Kritikos of Greece after the first round of the 26th Hellenic International Amateur Golf Championship being held at the Corfu Golf Club. Andy played a level par 72 round with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys on the front nine followed by a string of seven pars, a bogey and a birdie on the last nine. The Corfu Golf course measures 6183 metres for the Championship with a slope index of 130.

Chris Bergedahl and JJ Micallef, like Andy members of the Royal Malta Golf Club, are also participating in the Championship and all three participate in the Nations Cup as well as for the individual honour.

With scores of 8 over and 13 over, Chris and JJ placed joint 12th and joint 18th respectively after the first 18 holes. The tournament is a 72-hole event finishing on Saturday – so there is still plenty of golf to play yet.
