CHRISTMAS AND JOHNSON WIN THE MGA SHIELD 2019

04/10/2019

The thirteenth edition of the Malta Golf Association Shield sponsored by NESCAFÈ DOLCE GUSTO has just been played at the Royal Malta Golf Club in splendid weather conditions more suggestive of mid-summer rather than early autumn. As in previous years, the tournament was played in a medal stroke play for the first day and a Stableford for the second day with the Stableford points subtracted from the medal net scores to determine the overall placing. Despite the great weather, the number of participating players was less than previous editions with only 20 ladies and 72 men registering their intention.

The end of the first day of the ladies’ medal round showed three girl players occupy three of the top five leader board positions. Young Cherilyn Christmas led by three strokes over an even younger Laya Cristina. New member Carolina Romero stood one stroke further back whilst Filippa Schulze Doering (another junior) tied Michelle Allsopp for fourth place albeit eight strokes behind the leader.

The young girls continued to prevail on the second day. Filippa’s 39 Stableford points leap frogged her into second place over Laya whose 31 points were enough to maintain third overall place. But there could be no denying Cherilyn. With a steady 36 points she secured her top position with a margin of five clear points.

In the men’s competition, Nick Johnson’s fabulous seven under (handicap) left him three shots ahead of three other players and a pack of another nineteen players all within one or two shots of their handicap.

Nick mirrored his amazing score in the second round with a magnificent Stableford score of 42 points which saw him maintain the overall lead claiming the Shield with a clear seven points from Herbert Froehlich whose 40 points propelled him to second place. Another 42 points, this time from Peter Coleman, saw another change in the top positions as Peter moved thirteen places up to take third place.

Nicholas Urpani and Nicholas Beck claimed fourth and fifth places whilst Laurens Schulze Doering and Dave Hansen claimed the best junior and best senior players respectively.
