MALTA PLAYERS AT THE CYPRUS OPEN

17/05/2017

JJ Micallef and Laurens Schulze Doering will join 53 other players in the Cyprus Amateur Men’s Golf Open Tournament that will be played at Aphrodite Hills Golf Club. Under the auspices of the Cyprus Golf Federation this 54-hole competition will start on Friday 19th May and will have participants hailing from Libya, United Kingdom, Israel, America, Hungary, Russia, Estonia, Austria, Germany, Hungary and Bulgaria.

JJ is in excellent form having recently won the Scratch Competition at Royal Malta Golf Club. His handicap of +3.2 makes him the current best player on home soil as well as the best in the field of players at the Cyprus Open. JJ has already represented Malta in a number of international competitions. Indeed, he placed second in the Turkish Open last year. Also last year he was part of the national team that won Bronze in the European Team Shield Championship and in the previous year he was again part of the national team that won silver in the Games of the Small States of Europe.

Laurens has also been playing well throughout the golf season which sees him second in the Order of Merit table just behind JJ. At just 13 years of age, Laurens is the best performing junior and has seen his handicap drop swiftly over these last eighteen months. This will be Laurens first show in a men’s tournament albeit he has already featured in several junior competitions abroad. Laurens will be the third youngest player in the Cyprus Open - the youngest being an 11 year old from Israel followed by a local boy of 12 years.

The players’ participation in the Cyprus Open is thanks to the funding scheme of the Maltese Olympic Committee whilst Nike Golf is behind the players’ sporting wear.
